When most couples get engaged, they pick a date based on when they can book a wedding venue and don't even think about the honeymoon until months later. I know when I got married over 20 years ago, we picked a holiday weekend so that family could travel to the wedding without having to take too much time off. Here is a picture of me and my husband on our wedding day. We look like babies.
Most couples want to take their honeymoon right after the wedding and I don't blame them. After all that planning, I would want a vacation too. I recommend couples think of the following things before they set that all important date:
- Don't schedule your wedding on a holiday weekend. If you are set on doing a holiday wedding, you may need to consider doing your honeymoon later. Not to mention, trips over holidays are always more expensive due to airfare prices.
- Are you picking a popular wedding date? My wedding planner friends will tell you that 9/10/2020 was a popular date as well so you should avoid dates like these also.
- What time of year are you thinking of getting married? Fall has been a very popular time but it's not necessarily conducive to Caribbean honeymoons since that is peak hurricane season. Working with a travel agent before you set the date ensure that you get to go to the destination you want to for you honeymoon and not having to settle for a less favorite destination.
- Budget - No one wants to talk about this 6 letter word but unless you are marrying a Rockefeller, this is an important factor. Some destinations are more expensive than others. Additionally, most destinations have what they consider to be shoulder seasons where pricing will be less. If you have your heart set on a destination that is out of your budget you may want to consider a destination wedding which let you save money on the wedding. But that is a whole other topic we will save for later.
- What do you and your fiance like to do on your honeymoon? Obviously destinations offer different things to do. Are you wanting a relaxing honeymoon, adventure or culture? Certain times of year lend itself better to different destinations. You and your fiance may want to go to Costa Rica because you love adventure but if its in the middle of the rainy season than you may not want to plan your wedding for that time.
Finally, remember that the wedding is just one day, but your marriage is forever. So I encourage you to be selfish. Put you and your fiancé and your marriage first. Invest in your upcoming marriage and plan that honeymoon first.
