I recently returned to Jamaica and I fell in love with it all over again! A little rest and relaxation was just what I needed after being home for so many months and not being able to travel like I wanted to! I want to share with you what I love about the island but first, lets talk geography. Jamaica is made up of three main tourism corridors. Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril. There are two international airports on the island; Kingston and Montego Bay. However, almost all travelers fly into Montego Bay.
- Negril - This section of Jamaica is mostly known for its long sandy beaches. They are just gorgeous. The water is typically calm on this beach and the sunsets over the horizon make for a beautiful evening to enjoy a sunset. Jamaica beaches are open to the public Therefore, the long beaches in Negril can attract locals who will offer some local goods.
- Montego Bay - This is the bigger city out of the three and the location of one of the international airports. This is a great destination if you are looking for a short stay. Beaches in this location tend to be more cove like and not long stretches.
- Ocho Rios - This town is located along the north side of the island and is a port town to cruise lines. Visitors who love lush rainforests and rivers love this side of the island. As in Montego Bay, the beaches tend to be smaller and more private.
Jamaica is located in the Caribbean and is found in hurricane alley. Like many islands in the Caribbean it is important to keep that in mind when planning your travel dates. Hurricane season lasts June to November with most activity occurring the end of August through September. The rainy season is May and October through November. The wettest months tend to be either September or October.
So now that we have that out of the way....let's talk about what I love about Jamaica!
- The people!!! - Jamaicans just have a way of making me feel relaxed. Their attitude is No Problem and when you have a drink in hand and relaxing on the beach, there is not a care in the world! You will often hear Jamaican's say "Ya Mon" which means "No Problem". With that being said, it is important to keep expectations in check when speaking of service. They are on island time so things make take a little longer when on the island. In my most recent visit, I was pleasantly surprised by their sense of humor and sarcasm compared to other destinations I have visited. I loved the banter! I love their zest for life!
- The food - when most people think of food and Jamaica, they think of jerk chicken. I do love jerk which I find to be very flavorful and not always spicy. However, that is not all that the island has to offer food wise. Many resorts source local fruits, vegetables and fish so I find a lot of the food to taste very fresh. Those wanting a little more spice will love the scotch bonnet peppers. During my last visit, I enjoyed a variety of fish (red snapper and lobster) and local vegetables. A vacation always means a diet when I return because I love to eat!!
- Music - Anyone who knows me, knows that I love reggae music. Most people know reggae music from Bob Marley. Reggae started back in the 60's but didn't become more widely known to those outside of the country till the 70's. There is just something that relaxes me about reggae music. Maybe it's the steel drums that just screams vacation. What better combination than beach time, cool drink and some reggae music. When we were in Negril, we were often serenaded by local musicians. It was so great to listen to the local music.

- Variety of Excursions - there are some iconic tour destinations on the island from Bio luminesce, climbing a large waterfall (Dunns RIver Falls), cliff jumping at Rick's Cafe, snorkeling in a blue hole (large marine cavern or sink hole). This island has so much to offer!
Some things you should know....
If you talk to anyone who has traveled to Jamaica, the topic of marijuana usually comes up. As I mentioned earlier about the beach being public, if you travel to Jamaica you should expect to be offered marijuana. If this is something that concerns you, this may not be the destination for you.
There is a lot more to see and do on the island than what I touched upon here. When my clients work with me, I find out what is important for them to see on their trip and I make recommendations to meet those needs. If you are wanting to travel, click on the button below to get started.
Happy Traveling!
